Mark Carney is the current Governor of the Bank of England. His mandate witnessed many epochal changes for Britain, including the EU membership referendum and the rise of climate consciousness among the wider population. In those respects, he outlined the possible dangers of Brexit to the UK economy, while he oversaw the process by which the Bank of England started taking into account the economic effects of climate change. Mark Carney is an incredibly influential figure in policy-making and The Economist’s Society is honoured to have him as a guest.
Mark Carney also serves as Chair of the Monetary Policy Committee, Financial Policy Committee and the Prudential Regulation Committee. Having studied at both Harvard and Oxford, Carney then started working in Goldman Sachs, where he spent 13 years. In 2003 he then joined the Bank of Canada as Deputy Governor for a year, after which he became Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance in the Department of Finance Canada. Finally, in 2008 he was appointed as Governor of the Bank of Canada, a position which he held until 2013.
