Part 3

"You know what it is. I think it's out of your hands the way you get gigs. I think you put yourself out there in a good manner and you speak to people, you meet people, people see you play. Then all of a sudden, click, it just happens the way it all just gets put into place. All of a sudden calls you and it's your dream gig. I don't know, it's just the way it's happened for me. I think the main key is, if you're coming to London or a big city as a drummer and you're studying at one of these music colleges like a lot of musicians end up at these music colleges. My point is, it's great to be studying but once that college finishes, or that night, you need to get out and meet other players. You need to go out and sit in jams. Not with the guys you were in college with. It's important to meet people outside of these colleges because otherwise, you're all going to be sounding the same and doing the same things. You need to meet people for them to call you for different gigs. That's all I can say, you've just gotta get out there and play with everyone; don't think about it the money, think about why you got into it. Get out there, don't just sit in your bedroom and practise. Go outside and play with different people and it will all drop into place.

Yeah I play bass, a bit of guitar, a bit of piano but I'm more like a studio. Drumming is kind of 40% of what I do now. The other percentage is, I spend a lot of time in my studio. I do a lot of writing for different artists, I do a lot of production; I produce a lot of different people and I'm producing and writing a lot of my own stuff. When they come in, I' producing and doing everything but then it's a little of drumming, a little bit of bass, it's balancing it all. That's where my heart is now, being a session drummer/producer.

Playing tonight has been great because I did a track from Level 42, which is cool because it's a bit of a show off on the drum track, couple of fills. Also, we did this new arrangement of a Blur song which is out now, or maybe coming out soon, and also two of my original songs from PB Underground which is really cool actually. Obviously I'm a drummer in my band but I'm just laying it down and I think it's kinda good for some of the young drummers to see. It's not all about chops, it's about laying it down because as a drummer I like to see people dance. I don't like seeing a sea of drummers at the side of me waiting for me to fill -- I like to see nice young women dancing at the side of me. I'd say check it out because there's some nice tracks on it. New EP by PB Underground called Drums at the Front. What a great name, eh?

It's a great show and I don't think there's anything else like that going on in the country as we speak.
