Coming from a kiwi perspective, here are a few things I was able to capture on my action camera taped to my hat that I thought were quite strange while driving in rush hour traffic this evening in Huizhou, China. Most of these actions would otherwise be totally unacceptable in New Zealand, possibly result in violent encounters but however totally acceptable or no ones cares here in China. More to come hopefully in the future as I gain more experience and learn more on the roads here.
The vehicle in question, don't think it's for sale anywhere outside of China just yet. Heres a wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_Des...
As a note, aside from the laughs (because it is quite funny). This video hopefully gives a little bit of an insight on why local Chinese drivers often drive so badly when getting in a motor vehicle in a foreign country. Mainstream private motor car ownership has only been a norm for the last 20 - 25 years or so (give or take) in this country. Driver's don't really know what the expected behaviour is on the road compared to western countries which have more organised traffic due to them having motor cars since what seems like the beginning of time...
Now, since when almost every household can afford or have access to a decent motor car, car ownership sky rockets. And in a country of over 1.4 billion people, the traffic can get a bit chaotic sometimes as it's difficult or near impossible to manage all the time. As mentioned before, people don't know what traffic could potentially look like because it's all that most people have ever known or seen, I'm not saying it strictly bad - the road traffic system does work fairly well here. But it could be more efficient and safer. Personally I think it's only something that time, better driver education and self awareness can fix long term. But who am I to say?
