STAR TREK: FROM THE SERIES TO THE MOTION PICTURE including 4K UHD REVIEW

First thing to say is that I made an error in this because the worldwide box office I quote was actually just the USA and America. I had it in mind that this film took about $150m worldwide but I haven't found anywhere to confirm that yet. Sorry for the mistake which comes near the end of this one.

Star Trek The Motion Picture was under consideration for a number of years. As early as three years after the series was cancelled Paramount commissioned Gene Roddenberry to prepare a story for a possible big screen outing. That came to nought as did several more attempts before Paramount decided on a new televison series by the name of 'Star Trek Phase 2'. All was proceeding on that basis until the constant bickering among the producers and executives became too much and hence how the initial two hour pilot episode was transformed into the film we have all come to know. Star Wars rather changed the character driven approach as it convinced everyone that they had to match the special effects achieved in Star Wars.

In this video I detail the process of what led to Star Trek The Motion Picture, from the cancellation of the show at the end of the third series to the production of the film and how it stands up today on the 4K disc releases. Along the way we'll see some of the Star Trek home movie history and how the whole home movie market we know today really first got started.
Star Trek The Motion Picture may not be a film that I consider to be among the best films ever made but I do very much like it in spite of all its flaws. It may not have been everything us Trekkies would have wanted in 1979 but it did lay the groundwork for what came next... and I consider what came next, Star Trek The Wrath of Khan, to be one of the best sequels ever made. All being well, I'll get a chance to detail that film in a future video.
