Brief but intense. The trenches are rather claustrophobic, it's all a corridor or a room, and you got to search hidings when the patrols come in. The map isn't huge so the places seems more crowded.
Probably during the day is more convenient to travel on the outside, but it requires to be careful to other soldiers and use every cover as an advantage, hoping to not be encircled, like it happened to me - obviously the noise attracts everyone so its crucial to discover and remember the exits and other passages.
