Here we go to Cocoa Beach, Florida to visit the hotels, restaurants, and bars where the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts hung out during their off time while in the Cape Canaveral area, as their homes and families were in Houston. The astronaut's families also stayed in many of these places when visiting for a launch. Wernher Von Braun also stayed at one of these places.
Some of Space History was made in these places, including the origin of the infamous Gemini 3 corned beef sandwich and the lounge where Gus Grissom begged a reporter friend to help bring to light the many quality problems in the Apollo program and the overly fast schedule they were on for a 1968 moon landing. Ultimately, this reporter failed and Gus Grissom died in the Apollo 1 fire.
One of these hotels was actually jointly owned by the Mercury 7 astronauts for a while.
The largest and most frequently visited of these hotels is scheduled for demolition in December, 2021, so in this case, its a last look at history.
It took a very long time to research and make this video, so I hope everyone enjoys it. When more of these places are gone, this video will remain.
Shot in 4K 60fps.
At 1:53, that brown roofed building on the Southwest side of the Ocean Landings resort is actually the former lobby of the Starlite Motel. Check out the picture here with the same four columns, the same bottom of the roof jutting out from the building, and the same amount of doors and windows in the front.
