Hydraulic rams are usually filled with hydraulic oil. They are used to operate machinery like front-end loaders or diggers. But originally they were filled with water – so why not at least try filling them with compressed air? They’d be pneumatic pistons then, I suppose. Hydraulic pistons are designed to operate at far higher pressures than air is usually supplied at, so that shouldn’t be a problem. But there is a problem - compressed air always has some water in it too, and that will rust the inside of the cylinder, so that’s a challenge. But otherwise, yes, you can use a hydraulic ram as an engine piston!
