American Classical Music Introduction

Developed over many years, this is a full, in depth examination on the American art form known as Jazz. On the major contributors who helped to shape the idiom and the concepts that changed music all over the world. The class lectures will be accompanied by audio/ video performance links and excerpts from important historical sources. We will discuss the careers of such major figures as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Billie Holiday, Fletcher Henderson, Charlie Parker, James P Johnson, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Tony Williams and many more. You will learn how to create a timeline from Africa, through the Blues all the way to modern jazz of today which should help you form ideas on where our modern musical concepts are coming from. This course will also explore the major role Jazz music has played in the social and cultural life of America. Expect spirited discussions and unique coursework concerning the analysis and history of America's Classical Music.
