Dr Augusta McMahon on 'From Tell Brak to Lagash: The Diversity of Early Mesopotamian Cities'

Mesopotamian cities are the world’s earliest urban settlements, but was there ever a ‘typical Mesopotamian city’? This lecture will examine two of Mesopotamia’s most important cities: Tell Brak and Tell al-Hiba (ancient Lagash). Tell Brak, in northeast Syria, was one of the region’s first cities, reaching urban scale and complexity in the early 4th millennium BC. Lagash, in south Iraq, grew to be one of Mesopotamia’s largest urban sites during the mid-3rd millennium BC. This lecture will compare the urban landscapes, power epicentres, occupational densities, and economies of these two cities, with a focus on the diversity of Mesopotamian urbanism.

Augusta McMahon is Professor of Mesopotamian Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. She has conducted field research at Lagash, Tell Brak, Nippur, Nineveh, and many other sites in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Egypt and Turkey. Her research interests include early urbanism, social stress and conflict, and sensory archaeology.
