The chuniri is a traditional bowed musical instrument of Georgia, preserved in its original form primarily by the mountain communities. It is considered the national instrument of Svaneti and is believed to have spread to other regions from there.
In this video, the chuniri is played in the village of Laskadura, Svaneti, by Kushni Gugava, continuing a long-standing tradition. One of its most solemn roles is in mourning rituals, where it is performed in village cemeteries to console families grieving the loss of a loved one.
During Easter, it is customary for every villager to visit each grave, even those without caretakers or visitors, and offer a word in memory of the deceased. This remembrance is often accompanied by a glass of wine, though not always. After speaking, the person pours the wine onto the grave, tracing the sign of the cross as a final tribute.
