Duke University traces its roots to 1838, when it was founded as Brown's Schoolhouse in Randolph County, North Carolina, by Methodist and Quaker families. It became Union Institute, then Normal College, and later Trinity College as it grew in size and academic stature. In 1892, the college moved to Durham thanks to support from Washington Duke, a wealthy tobacco industrialist. His financial backing and the city's thriving economy allowed the college to expand its facilities and curriculum.

In 1924, James B. Duke, son of Washington Duke, established The Duke Endowment, a massive trust fund that transformed Trinity College into Duke University in honor of his father.
