On Sunday 27th September 2009 former residents of Magdalene Laundries and their supporters held a march in Carlow, calling for compensation from the Government and religious institutions for the abuse they suffered while resident in Ireland’s Magdalene laundries.
The march came several days after Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe confirmed that women who were resident in the country's Magdalene Laundries are not eligible for compensation from the Residential Institutions Redress Board.
Campaigner Christine Buckley attended the march and said the women were not 'employees' and many had been sent to the laundries by the courts and other organs of the State.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Carlow and a monument was unveiled at the town park to all survivors who suffered abuse while resident in Religious run institutions.
