On my road trip through Morocco, I made a special stop in Midelt, a fascinating and largely non-touristic city nestled in the high plains between the Middle and High Atlas mountains. Midelt is not only a commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural region but also one of Morocco’s principal mining centers, known especially for its rich history in lead, zinc, fluorite, and other minerals.
Midelt grew around a French administrative post in the early 20th century, primarily to support mining operations in nearby areas like the Ahouli and Mibladen mines. These mines, initiated by the French company Penarroya in 1927, were once bustling with activity, producing tens of thousands of tons of lead annually until the 1960s. The mining tunnels extend deep underground, reaching about 2 kilometers in length, with complex shafts and chambers where miners once worked under challenging conditions.
Exploring the abandoned Ahouli mines was a thrilling adventure. Descending into the dark, narrow tunnels about 2 kilometers underground, I witnessed lead ore for the first time in my life, alongside other minerals such as azurite, malachite, galena, baryte, coronadite, and fluorite—some of which form stunning cubic crystals. The experience of navigating these old mining shafts, with their ladders, pulleys, and remnants of mining tools, was both exhilarating and humbling, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of miners who once toiled here.
After the mine exploration, I visited nearby villages where traditional homes are built using mud, stone, and grass, blending harmoniously into the unique mountainous landscape. These villages reflect the Berber heritage of the region, with their distinctive architecture and way of life. The simplicity and resilience of the villagers’ lifestyle were striking, especially when contrasted with the harsh mining environment.
Later, I visited another type of underground mine still in operation, where miners use drilling machines to extract minerals. Observing their daily lives and the physical demands they face was eye-opening and gave me a deeper appreciation for their hard work and perseverance.
To end this adventurous day, the friend who guided us through the mines invited us to his village and warmly hosted us for the night, providing a heartfelt connection to the local culture and community.
Overall, this journey through Midelt and its mining heritage was an unforgettable adventure filled with history, natural beauty, and human stories rarely seen by tourists.
