Britain’s Challenger 2 Sucks and This is why


Firstly it weighs anywhere from 62 to 75t depending on armour. Although it has a beast of an engine, a 26L twin turbocharged V12, it’s weight still means it’s slow with a top speed of only 37mph in comparison to the leopard 2’s 43mph.


Furthermore, the weight means it’s prone to getting stuck in marshy terrain as has been seen with it’s use in Ukraine.


The tank also has minimal protection against loitering ammunition/ drone attacks, relying on it’s chobham and reactive armour. This is such a worry that some ukrainians have even added extra turret cages to protect the tank from above. Newer prototype tanks such as the German KF51 will have automated close in defence systems to shoot down loitering ammunition before it even reaches the tank.


The next problem is it’s rifled 120mm main gun. Although this adds accuracy, it also increases the maintenance required as with continued use the rifled barrel wears down. On top of this specific two part ammunition is required rather than the single piece NATO standard. This restricts the length of the armor piercing ammo due to storage issues, reducing its penetrating capabilities.


To add to all of this the Chally 2 has no auto loader increasing the crew size and interior space needed as well as reload times in a longer fight.


With all of this said pretty much every negative point i’ve stated in the video has a counter benefit and my true belief is that the Challenger 2 is still a kick ass fantastic tank. So stay tuned for a video that delves right into that!
