New Rider + $20,000 Motorcycle.. | CBR1000RR (SP) Track Day!

The Supermoto was fun, but now it's time to hop on a real bike and see what 1000CC's feel like. Being my first time ever on a liter bike I was a bit nervous especially considering that this was my first ever track day.. But that’s why Honda does it best. The power came on smooth, the chassis inspired confidence, and overall I was surprised how easy it felt to ride. I honestly believe it was the perfect bike for a first timer on a track of this size.

I don’t have any experience with bikes of this nature so I really can’t compare it to anything. But as you heard in several of the riders comments, John doesn’t hand out his bikes often, so I had quite a bit of weight on my shoulders and a rock in my gut thinking about the possibility of laying it down. Funny enough he was actually riding his older RR as our coach in the front of the pack, I was a bit confused by that but when he was asked about it, he laughed and said “Well I can actually get parts for the 2019” So that was a bit comforting and got a laugh out of me.

Regardless, in this environment you have to focus, so I tried to put my brain at ease and figure this bike out. At 6’4" I felt like a giraffe riding a pocket rocket, and with my 2 knee surgeries in the past year limiting my range of motion, I had to sit quite awkwardly on the seat making it difficult to shift. But thankfully I was able to stay in second or third most of the time with the broad power band ranging from 3000rpm, right up to the red line at 13,000. Coming from the 200 pound lighter 450 Supermoto, the added weight actually felt nice. When you leaned the bike over it felt planted, predictable, and it was way more suited for these long sweeping corners. The track at Mid Ohio is a bit rougher than I would have expected, but it is ultimately a car course with the first event being held back in August of 1962. I think the coolest part of this experience overall was the visual aspect. I have only seen something like this on TV and in video games. So I felt like I was in a Moto GP race, but let's leave out the fact that an experienced rider could have kept up with us on a Vespa..
