People in Orania are truly happy! We spoke to many people but just photographed a few. The video speaks for itself.
Orania, a small town in South Africa’s Northern Cape, is a highly unique and controversial place. Whether it is considered a “happy” city depends a lot on perspective, values, and the metrics used to define happiness.
What is Orania?
Orania is an Afrikaner-only town founded in 1991 with the goal of preserving Afrikaner culture and language (Afrikaans). It’s privately owned and run, with its own local economy, labor force, and even currency (the Ora). It is known for its emphasis on self-sufficiency, clean streets, low crime, and community cohesion.
Arguments That Suggest Orania Might Be a "Happy" Place (for Its Residents):
Low crime rates: Residents report a high level of personal safety.
Community bonds: A strong sense of shared identity and common goals.
Self-reliance and local economy: The town operates largely independently and maintains infrastructure well.
Cleanliness and order: Orania is notably well-kept and organized.
Cultural preservation: Residents feel empowered to maintain their language and traditions.
