In Fluent Bodies (Duke, 2002), medical anthropologist Jean Langford describes the contrasting epistemologies of biomedicine and Ayurveda. In this brief clip, I use her analysis to show how an interest in Ayurveda leads students back in time, away from the alienation of the clinical gaze, and into a space of intuition.
The journey is facilitated through Ayurveda's central gift: an embodied poetics that pays close attention to the connections between feeling states, generating broad psychosomatic insights. It's a poetry that describes experience beyond diagnosis, and points towards a subjective medicine for a flesh that can heal because it is fluid with constant change.
