3. Component – PC – psychological capacity
Resilience – you’ve been probably hearing this word so many times for the last months in the business context in private life and just as one of the most important competences to deal with the global VUCA world – volatility, uncertainty, complexity & ambiguity. Isn’t it exactly the abbreviation for what is in the NOW? No matter the industry, country, organization. No matter if last year you lost some part of your business or team or maybe you grew your business and the team. Or that’s exactly part of the story – unknown.
As we hear the word, the question is - do we understand the deep meaning of it? In this short series of articles and videos I will share three components of resilience that I discovered with my team through the experience working with leaders and managers as a business psychologist, board advisor and transformation guide. Empowering them to take wise decisions, bold actions, engage employees & stakeholders, cocreate the new reality, innovate, and maybe even reshape the business model or a product or a service.
In episode 3 I focus on the last component of resilience – psychological capacity. In short words it is your mental & emotional ability to hold things on your shoulders. Simply answering the question – how much can I hold? But not when things go great and we achieve and all the KPI’s are met, people are happy but also when we don’t achieve, when we need to deal with and execute difficult decisions, that often come from the headquarter and sometimes we cannot impact them that much, or the demand for your products and services is so high that the amount of work and workload is really overwhelming and happily looking forward to the bright future you just think how not to drop into burnout or depression, lack of energy, confidence as this seems to be a never ending dance with unlearning, and relearning new approaches, behaviours to be able to hold of what’s emerging.
One of my friends is a surgeon – an amazing doctor that when breaking your bones you can have the best in the country - but he is also a hot air balloons pilot and just imagine how this passion not only helps him to deal with stress but simply expands the inner capacity to hold a space for people to feel save when they are after an accident or any other difficulties. As many of surgeries that he did, this builds his experience and mental & emotional capacity. if you lead consciously all the difficult stories that creates you as a leader they all expand your psychological capacity. so we don’t here – I cannot hold any more – rather just – how can I expand it?
