Rebecca Cooney, PhD, is the Chief Editor of Nature Mental Health, where she brings deep expertise in clinical psychology, neuroscience, and science communication. Prior to joining Nature in 2022, she served as North American Executive Editor of The Lancet and previously held editorial roles at The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Cooney earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University, where her research focused on the neural basis of mood and anxiety disorders. She continued this work during a postdoctoral fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Her interests span clinical trials, public mental health policy, and the neurobiology of mood disorders.
Leanne Williams, PhD, is the Stanford Vincent V.C. Woo Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health. She pioneered neuroscience-based ‘biotypes’ of depression and anxiety, integrating neuroimaging and clinical measures to guide individualized treatment. She created the first clinical platform to identify biotypes in real time, enabling precision selection of medications, behavioral therapies, neuromodulation, and emerging therapeutics. Using advanced computational methods, her team continues to refine and scale this approach. Author of the first textbook on Precision Psychiatry (APA) and over 400 publications, she is internationally recognized for translating neuroscience into mental health care.
