National Waterways in India are inland water routes (rivers, canals, creeks, and lakes) that have been declared as national waterways by the Government of India for the purpose of shipping and navigation. These waterways are developed and maintained to promote cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation.
The development and regulation of national waterways are handled by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Inland water transport helps reduce congestion on roads and railways, lowers transportation costs, and supports sustainable economic growth.
India has 111 National Waterways, spread across various states, covering major rivers such as the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and West Coast Canal. These waterways are used for cargo transport, passenger movement, and tourism.
National waterways play an important role in strengthening logistics, trade, regional connectivity, and employment opportunities in the country.
