If you have the newer version of the Cobalt 80 Volt Max with direct drive, then you need try this experiment with your trimmer. Go ahead and wind it up just like it says in the instructions until it offers up heavy resistance or binds up on you. Then take the cover off and look how the string bunched up on one side of the spool. This is easily solved by winding the spool by hand. Disassembly is easy once you have done it a few times. Watch the video and see how I do it. It takes less than 2 minutes to restring this way and your fingers will thank you for it.
Update: I'm not totally sure what is going on yet but there might be an issue with the grey colored spool as shown in this video. Some of you might have an orange colored spool that does not have this particular issue and it will wind up for you just fine turning the bump knob CCW as stated in the instructions without disassembling the head. If you like rewinding this way, and it doesn't cause any issues for you please let me know which color spool you have in the comments below.
Some of you have complained about the two tabs being hard to release and might be true if you don't know the secret. The way I do it requires no tools of any kind and the cover will pop right off every time. The secret is to push on each tab individually and alternate back an forth pushing on the very end of the plastic tab. It might take 3 or 4 iterations of pressing on the tabs one at a time but it will pop right off. I wish I would have included this in the video but forgot to do so.
