Frank Thompson was a British Special Operations Executive (SOE) Officer who parachuted into the Balkans in January 1944 to assist Bulgarian partisans in their fight against their Nazi-Allied monarchy. The elder brother of the labour historian, E.P. Thompson, and the university sweetheart of the writer, Iris Murdoch, Frank Thompson was a poet and a polyglot who spoke eight languages. He was captured by Bulgarian gendarmes in May of 1944, and should have been held as a prisoner of war. Instead, he was summarily shot in blatant violation of international law.
Frank Thompson's story is just one of those explored in The Left Side of History: World War II and the Unfulfilled Promise of Communism in Eastern Europe
