In the case of 16-year-old Tara Dennis, tragically killed allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, the role of
families and communities in safeguarding child rights comes to the forefront. Tara's story
underscores the vital importance of familial support and community vigilance in protecting vulnerable
individuals, especially young girls, from violence and harm. Furthermore, the community's response
to Tara's untimely death reveals the interconnectedness and responsibility inherent in community
relationships.
The role of families and communities in protecting child rights is crucial for ensuring children's well-
being and development. Families provide love, support, and guidance, nurturing children's growth
and advocating for their rights, including education and protection from harm. Meanwhile,
communities offer a network of support and resources, promoting awareness, advocating for
policies, and intervening in situations of abuse or neglect.
With cases like Tara’s, we ask what interventions are currently available to strengthen understanding
of rights available to the child and what support is being given to parents and communities to help
them support their children in taking up those rights?
To discuss these issues, we are joined by:
ACP Clifford Chambers - Assistant Commission of Police for Area One
Mr. Stewart Jacobs – President, National Parent Teacher Association of Jamaica
