Hanbridge Mandarin HSK GRAMMAR VIDEO: HOW TO USE 才能 AND 才干

Hi everyone, welcome to Hanbridge Mandarin’s HSK program. Today we’ll talk about two Chinese words meaning ability, which are 才能 and 才干。Both words are nouns and are used to describe someone who has the ability to do something well. In most cases these two words can be swapped, but they also have some differences.

Firstly, we will give you some examples to show you the situations where they can be swapped.

In the following examples, they can swap:
下面的例子是两个词可以互换的：
1.从他管理以后公司的业绩就可以看出他的才能。
The good performance of the company shows his ability since he took over it.
从他管理以后公司的业绩就可以看出他的才干。
2.他觉得在美国不能施展自己的才能，所以他选择回了中国。
He decided to come back to China because he couldn’t find a good scope for his ability in America.
他觉得在美国不能施展自己的才干，所以他选择回了中国。

Besides the meaning as above, 才能has the meaning of “a person having talent for something or having great thought capability”, for instance
“writing ability or scientific research ability”

Okay, that’s all for the comparison of 才能and 才干. Here is a small quiz for you to check if you can use them correctly:

It’s easy for one to have a talent or ability, but what’s important is how one brings it out.
