This demonstration includes a combined methane fire, explosion and fire. The row of roof supports created a barrier to the mixing of methane in the chamber and there were mixtures of fuel rich and explosive methane concentrations. The original ignition was a fuel rich methane fire that burned for a second or so until it encountered an explosive mixture of methane which exploded. It was a low velocity explosion as you can see the initial explosion relieved as it blew out of the chamber (Sealed with glad wrap). The explosion then propagates into the explosive mixture as a low velocity explosion. When the explosive mixture of methane is consumed some residual fuel rich gas continues to burn until it too is also consumed. The lesson here is that in a mine there is no way that the gas mixture in any location is a single homogeneous mixture of gas at a certain concentration. The consequences of a methane ignition can not be known until it happens and the consequences will result from a complex range of circumstances and conditions which existed at, during and after the ignition, fire or explosion. Whatever happens, none of it is going to be good.
