My Choice - Birkirkara: Heart of a Woman, Gold & Silver

1. Heart of a Woman - Frauenherz, Op.166a Polka/Mazurka composed in 1864 by the Austrian composer, Josef Strauss.

-- Josef Strauss (1827--1870) was an Austrian composer. He was born in Vienna, the son of Johann Strauss I. He received training as an engineer, and worked for the city of Vienna as an engineer and designer. Strauss had talents as an artist, painter, poet, dramatist, singer, composer and inventor.

He joined the family orchestra, along with his brothers, Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss in the 1850s. His first published work was called "Die Ersten und Letzten" (The First and the Last).

He was known as 'Pepi' by his family and close friends, and Johann once said of him: "Pepi is the more gifted of us two; I am merely the more popular..."

-- Franz Lehár was born in the northern part of Komárom, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Komárno, Slovakia), the eldest son of a bandmaster in the Infantry Regiment No. 50 of the Austro-Hungarian Army.

He is most famous for his operettas -- the most successful of which is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) -- but he also wrote sonatas, symphonic poems, marches, and a number of waltzes (the most popular being Gold und Silber, composed for Princess Pauline von Metternich's "Gold and Silver" Ball, January 1902), some of which were drawn from his famous operettas.

-- We take a quick tour of Birkirkara, Malta, a town of 25,900 inhabitants in central Malta. It is the most populated town on the island. There are many places of interest in Birkirkara, amongst them the Old Railway Station which is today located within a public garden. We'll also see some of the chapels and buildings found in this beautiful town.

Trains were used as means of transportation across the island until the Railway's closure in 1931. Other town features include the aqueducts built by Grandmaster Wignacourt in the 17th Century and St Helen's basilica, one of the most beautiful churches on the Maltese islands, housing Malta's largest church bell. Birkirkara is one of Malta's oldest towns and received mention in the 1436 Ecclesiastical Report mentioning the then existing parishes in Malta and Gozo.

Birkirkara's main religious feast is that of St Helen which is celebrated on 18 August if it falls on a Sunday, or on the first Sunday after that date. The main event of the celebration is a procession with a large beautiful wooden statue carved by the Maltese master-sculptor Salvu Psaila.
