Story Two: THE LATE TRUCK

Так, від міста торохкотить, аж підскакує, одинокий сміттєвоз.
Yes, from the city comes rattling, jolting and bouncing, a lone garbage truck.

О такій порі? Що трапилося?
At such an hour? What has happened?

А нічого, тільки, їдучи вранці на смітник, водій завернув до свого двоюрідного брата і гостював до самого вечора,
Nothing at all — only that, driving to the dump in the morning, the driver turned in to his cousin’s place and stayed visiting until evening,

а це схаменувся і летить швидше од вітру…
and then came to his senses and now is racing faster than the wind…

Але що ж це ще?
But what is this now?

Їхав-їхав прямо і раптом повертає вбік, на дорогу, що веде до лісу, і за поворотом зникає.
He drove and drove straight on, and suddenly turns aside, onto the road leading into the forest, and vanishes beyond the bend.

Дивно, навіть дуже дивно…
Strange — very strange indeed…

Адже взимку в лісі ні гриби не ростуть, ні суниці не спіють…
After all, in winter no mushrooms grow in the forest, and no wild strawberries ripen…

Коли б ми в такий час зустріли в лісі сирітку Оленку —
If at such a time we were to meet the orphan girl Olenka in the forest—

ми знали б, що її вигнала мачуха шукати під снігом суниці,
we would know that her stepmother had driven her out to look for strawberries beneath the snow,

а хто ж міг би вигнати о такій порі водія?..
but who could possibly have driven a driver out at such an hour?..

А давайте доженемо його і крадькома підглянемо, що він тут робитиме?
So let us catch up with him and secretly spy on what he will be doing here.

Ось, зупинивши машину між деревами,
Now, having stopped the truck among the trees,

він натиснув залізну ручку, що біля керма,
he pressed the iron lever beside the steering wheel,

кузов із сміттям став сторчма і висипав на сніг усе, що було в машині.
the cargo bed with the refuse tipped upright and spilled everything from the truck onto the snow.

Тепер ясно:
Now it is clear:

безсовісний водій полінувався їхати до смітника
the shameless driver was too lazy to drive to the dump

і викинув сміття біля дороги в лісі.
and dumped the garbage by the roadside in the forest.

Покінчивши з цією роботою, він, звичайно, заверне машину
Having finished this task, he will, of course, turn the truck around

й пожене назад у місто,
and rush back toward the city,

тим паче, що до середини ночі лишилося десь три чи чотири години…
all the more so since there are some three or four hours left until midnight…

Та… та що він ще надумав?
But… but what else has he decided?

Замість того, щоб їхати назад,
Instead of driving back,

він витяг з-під сидіння сокиру
he pulled an axe out from under the seat

й вилазить із кабіни.
and climbs out of the cab.

Хряснув дверцятами,
He slammed the door,

закинув на плече сокиру
threw the axe over his shoulder

й побрів снігом у гущу лісу…
and trudged through the snow into the thick of the forest…
