Fish In a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt describes Ally's experience with a learning challenge. Ally is made fun of, feels stupid and is frequently sent to the principal's office, until a new teacher recognizes the issue. By focusing on her problem solving skills and teaching her chess, Ally begins to build self-confidence which helps her overcome the challenge of dyslexia. Students, who laughed before, now admire her and begin to reach out in friendship. This is a great book for developing empathy in all students.
