The nocturnes of Chopin are some of his best compositions, using techniques of variation, transposition, major/minor, different endings and thought continuation pioneered by CPE Bach and J. Haydn. The genre itself was invented by Field, whose career was centred on St. Petersburg. Here too you can hear Chopin's evident debt to Bel Canto, particularly Bellini.
The term "Romantic" introduced by R. Schumann was in fact a political statement, an attempt to create a movement in the 19th century that rather than being a radical break continued many elements from the 18th.
The true romanticism, as any student of literature knows, was created in the court of Frederick II of Prussia. By the early to mid 19th century it was often the butt of jokes, as in the memoirs of the tomcat Murr by ETA Hoffman, or his prequel to the Meistersinger of Nürnberg.
