In this video, I sit down with David & Tonya Whittaker, a married Black American couple who moved from the United States to Japan over two decades ago. They are the founders of Soul Food House, a family-owned soul food restaurant in Tokyo. What began as a move abroad eventually became a lifelong commitment, shaped by culture, faith, and community.
David and Tonya share what it’s really like living in Japan as Americans, as foreigners, and as Black people, and how those experiences have evolved over the last 20 years. They talk openly about the challenges they faced early on, the lessons they learned along the way, and what ultimately made them decide to stay when many others chose to return home.
