The First Graphical PC Came From 1970s Oregon?

One of the unsung heroes of early personal computers might actually be an obscure 1975 desktop scientific workstation from Tektronix with a marvelous 1024 x 1024 vector display... The Tektronix 4051.

Notes and Errata (from working without a script and talking fast!)
----------

In the video a bunch I refer to "electron gun control" when what I really mean is "deflection control."

When I mention that the screensaver dims the gun, this is obviously incorrect- this is what would happen in a non-storage tube, where the gun is refreshing the screen and gun power is proportional to phosphor intensity. The way the screensaver works on this is decreasing the overall intensity of the screen by lowering the bias voltage on the persistence grid that keeps the previously activated phosphor alive. Duh! Also the electrostatic deflection method has nothing to do with this so I shouldn't have mentioned it in the same breath.

I am indeed aware that my claim that this is a PC, and the first graphical one at that, is a bit dubious. :D The idea here is to spur some thinking on what a PC actually is, and what it means to be first in a category with blurred lines. I do think that the 4051 (And systems like the HP 9845 as well, which I will do a later video on) are the unsung heroes of a market category that was almost a personal computer, and we speak far too much to things like the IMSAI, Apple, and Altair when we discuss them now.

The 6502 did not supercede the more expensive Motorola predecessor, the 6800, used in this machine. Rather, it just took all the wind out of its sails. Motorola continued to market the 6800 after the core design team went off to found MOS and do the 6502- but the 6502 sold a LOT more units.
