In this video, we delve into one of the lesser-known episodes in the life of bluegrass legend Bill Monroe — the 1989 accusation that he struck a woman in the face with a Bible.
In May 1989, Monroe was arrested after a woman named Wanda Huff claimed Monroe refused to swear on the Bible that he wasn’t seeing other women — and then allegedly hit her with it.
According to reports, she said he “smacked her in the face with ‘a big ol’ Bible’” when she pressed him.
The case attracted attention and controversy in the southern press.
However, within days, the charges were dismissed. Prosecutors in Gallatin, Tennessee, expressed doubts about the accusations.
They also noted that a loaded pistol was found in Huff’s vehicle when she arrived at court to press her claim.
Monroe publicly said he was relieved the matter was resolved so he could “enjoy life.”
