Working on my Playdate game for a bit! Today’s task: there’s no egret here but I would like there to be an egret here. Let’s add interactive objects to the game engine so I can fix that. Originally streamed November 24, 2024.
While I was creating a game in World Builder for the original Macintosh, I decided it would be a fun project to port it to the Playdate. Much like the first Mac, this tiny yellow game system has a monochrome display that’s just a little bit smaller (in both resolution and size). Instead of a keyboard and mouse, it has a d-pad, a couple of buttons, and… a crank. This project would require completely redesigning the game—from one that occasionally requires text input to one that’s entirely point-and-click. Point-and-crank? This isn’t a complete record of the project like my World Builder series, but hopefully it offers some insight into what the process has been like.
