Sudeoksa Temple is a significant Buddhist temple located at the foot of Deoksungsan Mountain in Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. It is a head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and holds a long history, believed to have been founded during the Baekje Kingdom.
One of the temple's most notable features is its main Buddha hall, Daeungjeon Hall, which was constructed in 1308 during the Goryeo Dynasty and is designated as National Treasure No. 49. This makes it one of the oldest wooden structures in Korea with a clearly recorded construction date, showcasing beautiful and stable architectural aesthetics.
Sudeoksa Temple is also home to several other cultural heritage items, including a three-story stone pagoda, a scroll painting of Rocana Buddha (Treasure No. 1263), and a wooden seated Sakyamuni Buddha of the Three Times (Treasure No. 1381). Additionally, there is a stupa commemorating the Buddhist monk Mangong, which is a registered cultural heritage.
Today, Sudeoksa Temple houses Deoksung Chongnim, one of the major comprehensive training centers for monks of the Jogye Order, making it an important place for Buddhist practice and study. The serene atmosphere and historical significance of Sudeoksa make it a worthwhile destination for those interested in Korean Buddhism and traditional architecture.
