The Geebung tree (Persoonia sp.) is a fantastic native plant, offering nutritious fruit that wildlife love - but when it flowers, something surprising happens. Unlike other blossoms that buzz with pollinators, Geebung flowers remain relatively quiet. You might spot the occasional honey bee or native bee, but this plant isn’t an insect magnet.
However, one pollinator has evolved specifically for this job - the Geebung Bee (Leioproctus sp.). This solitary native bee is smaller and darker than a honey bee and perfectly adapted to access the deep, nectar-filled flowers of the Geebung. Over time, this specialist bee has developed a unique relationship with the plant, ensuring its pollination while taking advantage of its rich pollen and nectar supply.
In this video, I’ll explore:
• The fascinating evolution of the Geebung Bee
• Why the Geebung isn’t a typical pollinator hotspot
• How specialist pollinators like the Geebung Bee have adapted
• The importance of native bees in our ecosystems
If you love Australian native plants, wildlife gardening, or pollinators, this is a must-watch!
