Hubert Fontaine shows us how to prune a free-standing plum tree in winter, an operation to be done only rarely, every 3–4 years.

To make harvesting plums easier and to be able to walk around the fruit tree, start by cutting back the lower branches along the trunk.
It is important to thin out the canopy. Remove the “spurs” that get in the way during picking. Likewise, avoid letting branches cross each other: blown by the wind, they could rub together, causing wounds that become entry points for disease.
Good to know: Like all stone fruit trees, the plum tree does not tolerate pruning well. Prune plum and cherry trees only every 3–4 years, just enough to aerate the canopy and make access to the inside of the fruit tree easier.
