The Los Angeles afternoon sun beat down relentlessly as Emily Parker stood at the imposing wrought-iron gates of the Carter estate. She smoothed her simple navy dress—the nicest one she owned—and took a deep breath. At twenty-five, she carried herself with quiet dignity, but her eyes betrayed a sadness born of unanswered questions.
"This is it," she whispered to herself. "Don't blow it."
The security guard eyed her skeptically before making a call. After a brief exchange, the massive gates swung open with a mechanical groan. Emily stepped onto a cobblestone driveway that curved through meticulously maintained gardens before revealing a mansion that looked like it belonged in another century.
As she walked toward the main house, memories flashed through her mind—the St. Joseph's Orphanage with its cold walls and colder caretakers; Sister Margaret, the only one who showed her kindness; endless nights wondering who she was and where she came from.
The only connection to her past: a worn photograph of a young woman holding an infant. On the back, faded blue ink read simply: "My love, always." No names. No dates. Nothing but a silver rose pendant hanging from the woman's neck that Emily had memorized in every detail.
The massive front door opened before she could knock. An older woman with steel-gray hair pulled into a severe bun appeared, her lips pressed into a thin line.
