Green energy transition requires the development of efficient energy storage systems. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been dominating the market and are used for several applications (electronic devices, electric vehicles, etc.). However, Lithium is subject to geopolitical tensions, scarce, and expensive. Therefore, the development of other technologies post-lithium batteries is crucial to meet the growing demand. Thanks to their interesting physical properties, phosphate-based materials have attracted considerable attention. In this talk, the electrochemical properties novel P-based materials exhibiting different reaction mechanisms (conversion-type mechanism & intercalation/de-intercalation mechanism) were discussed as potential positive and negative electrodes for LIBs and post-lithium batteries. The role of advanced characterization techniques such as operando XRD, operando/ ex-situ XAS, ex-situ 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, Squid measurements in understanding the charge/discharge reactions was highlighted.
