Scenes 'n' Soundwaves Top 100 of 1978

These were among my favorite songs of 1978. The list was originally compiled at the end of that year, same for a few minor subsequent substitutions. It was the year I graduated college and started working in the real world. I also did a lot of clubbing as well.

While people equate 1978 as the year of "Saturday Night Fever", (a movie released in late 1977, but which music dominated the Top 40 airwaves much of '78, and revived disco music (and revived what some people thought the genre was dying), several other styles were apparent.

Mainstream rock was still very apparent, what many people now call "classic rock" and "yacht rock" (it was known as "arena rock' back in the day), with bands like Foreigner, ELO, Kansas and others having hits in '78.

Both rock and disco dominate this listing for 1978.

However, the underground scene, namely "punk" and "new wave", though not represented here (if I had to do an update on this list, there would be a lit), was starting to permeate the charts, and would start to surface in the mainstream in '79.

Aside from "Saturday Night Fever", another movie "Grease" became popular; 3 songs from it are on this list as well.

All songs except two charted on the Billboard Hot 100; one did make the competing trade magazine Cashbox, and the other was on the Canadian charts (I used to listen to CKLW in Detroit/Windsor back then). Each song's peak position is shown. If a song made Billboard's year-end Top 20, it is also shown, and also New York City's WABC's Top 77 list is shown if it made that top 20 as well.

Note that this is not the actual Billboard Year-End chart, but my list, so no doubt some of your favorite songs are missing. Feel free to list your favorites in the comments!
