Bujinkan 六尺棒術 Rokushakubō Jutsu kata 裏五法 Ura Goho

In order to communicate the concept of 力を抜くchikara o nuku as I had been exposed to recently in Japan, I started class with some simple jodan uke drills. Then we began to explore the 六尺棒術 Rokushakubō Jutsu kata 裏五法 Ura Goho. My plan was to share some of the feeling of the bojutsu I had recently studied with Hatsumi Sensei. I used the same feeling as with the jodan uke.

As an example, when you add 力を抜くchikara o nuku as a strategy to the initial tsuki in the kata ura goho, it forces your opponent to expose suki. In this case it set up a devastating strike to kasumi as the kata directs. Without this strategy, often your opponent is able to easily block each strike.
