5 days solo fly fishing, packrafting and wild camping Patagonia

The Rio Caleufú is the most remote of the three rivers I visited and if you like fly fishing in wild places then this is the river for you.

This episode tells the story of how I floated solo for five days with nothing but my packraft, a couple of fishing rods, tent and of course food.

It was January 2025 and although the river is low at this time of year there is enough water to packraft. Guides traditionally stop floating this river in December so I had the river to myself.

Although the river is small compared to the Limay or Collón Curá locals come here to catch the large trout that swim upstream from the reservoir below.

On my last day I hit the jackpot and caught one of these beautiful migratory fish, a good sized rainbow trout.

I hope this video will inspire you to fish the Caleufú river , and I have included practical tips to help you do this.

How do I get there?

This is not the easiest river to get to or from with public transport but it can be done. There is one bus a day from Junin de los Andes which leaves at 1415 and costs about $20 US, you need to get off at Puente Rio Hermoso which takes a couple of hours. I assume you can get a bus from Bariloche going the other direction too. I then hitch hiked (common in Argentina) down the dirt road number 63. It's about 30k and the gate and river access is a couple of kms past the Pozones De Caleufu which is marked on Google maps. At the bottom of the river there is a public fishing access point (no camping) and dirt road that leads back to the main road between Bariloche and Neuquén (RN237). It's a 10/15k walk but I recommend trying to get a lift from fishermen at the river. I got lucky with a lift all the way to Junin de los Andes. If you do walk to the main road then there is one bus in the middle of the night from the bridge over the Collón Curá to Bariloche and there is probably one the other way too.
