Rebirth of Plato: Ficino and More
Professor Angie Hobbs
Recorder Tue 4th November 2025, Queen Square, Bath
How did Greek philosophy help shape the Renaissance? In this talk, Professor Angie Hobbs explores the revival of Plato in the 15th and 16th centuries, focusing on how Plato’s Symposium influenced Marsilio Ficino’s philosophy of love and his idea of cosmic connectivity, later echoed in early modern science.
Professor Hobbs also examines Thomas More’s engagement with Plato’s Republic, showing how More used seriocomedy and dialogue to create an exploratory and educational work that reflects his deepest debt to Plato.
Angie Hobbs is Professor of the Public Understanding of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield and an internationally recognised expert on ancient philosophy, ethics, and political theory. She is the author of Plato and the Hero, Plato’s Republic: A Ladybird Expert Book, and Why Plato Matters Now. She is also a regular contributor to radio, TV, and global public forums.
Part of the Renaissance: Journeys of Discovery series at BRLSI.
