Cochlear implant patient: "I wish I'd done it sooner!"

Cochlear implant is a device that is surgically implanted in the ear of patients whose hearing is not improved by hearing aids alone. Cochlear implants help pediatric patients born with significant hearing problems and adult patients whose hearing loss is too severe to be managed effectively with hearing aids.

Bob Kromer wore hearing aids for nearly 30 years. Though he had been a candidate for a cochlear implant for a while, Kromer was reluctant. When he finally decided to have the surgery, it turned out to be life-changing. Just two weeks after the implant was activated, he was able to hear and understand voices, as well as sounds he hadn't even noticed were missing from his life. The cochlear implant restored Kromer's independence, allowing him to live the lifestyle he deserves.

SLUCare audiologist Sarah Borton specializes in the cochlear implantation process. She sees adult patients at Mercy Hospital and children at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. Borton works closely with otolaryngologist Dr. Anthony Mikulec, the primary cochlear implant surgeon with SLUCare Physician Group.
