This video uses public domain photographs and sketches to show the development of Damascus Gate (bab al-Amud) from 1849 to the present day. Watch as the path of beaten earth in front of the gate slowly fills with structures to accommodate Jerusalem's organic growth from the inside out. You'll see these same buildings torn down by order of the British Mandate government who defined Jerusalem primarily by its past and cut off Jerusalem's living growth in order to separate the Old City from the New. During the years of divided Jerusalem (1948-1967), a partition wall was built on the west side of Damascus Gate. The video ends showing Muslim Jerusalemites gathering at the gate to sing and celebrate Ramadan. Enjoy!
