This is a reupload because i had to remove the Norman Picklestripes song “I Love To Act” out of the video bcz NBCUniversal hates me i guess lmao
Recorded after Floogals - Season 1 Episode 46: Jewelry Box and Masha’s Karaoke and Songs - Season 1 Episode 3: Song of Jams. (which just like the Norman Picklestripes song had to be cut for copyright reasons)
So this is it, the final day of Universal Kids. After almost 20 years, They finally decided to pull the plug on this channel. I only recorded this in case they actually had a farewell message. (Spoiler alert: it didn’t.) It was supposed to shut down at 6am, but i guess NBCUniversal couldn’t wait that long to shut it down. This is also the first cable children’s channel to ever close down in the US without a replacement. (that we know of, some people say that MeTV Toons will replace the channel’s slot but i don’t think that’s confirmed.)
I’m honestly not surprised this channel ceased operations, yet i’m kinda sad about it because they had potential, but since they stopped producing original content in 2019 and decided to add Cocomelon of all things on the channel, it seems that potential was wasted and the aforementioned original content was moved to Peacock. (example: DreamWorks’ Where’s Waldo premiered on the channel in 2019 and moved to Peacock a year later.)
And to add insult to injury, their views have been declining hard compared to other children’s oriented channels like Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, Discovery Family, Disney Junior, PBS Kids, Boomerang (which my cable provider does not have but i felt like i should mention that channel for those that have said channel), BabyFirstTV, Kids Street, Primo TV, and even Disney XD had higher views than this channel (well, now their views are lower than Universal Kids, but at the time their views were higher than said channel).
But, hey, at least Cocomelon won’t be on linear TV anymore. that’s probably the only good thing about this.
Well, it was fun while it lasted. but now, it’s time to say goodbye to Universal Kids (formerly Sprout).
R.I.P.
Universal Kids (formerly Sprout)
(September 26, 2005 - March 6, 2025)
Apologies for the fan sound in the background lmao.
Now for a Universal Kids/Sprout Q&A.
Answer if you want in the comments.
Q: What was your favorite show from the channel?
A: When it was Sprout: Sesame Street, Pajanimals, The Chica Show, LazyTown, The Good Night Show, Floogals, Poppy Cat, Astroblast, Dot, Barney & Friends, Sarah and Duck, Noodle and Doodle, Caillou (yes, i’m serious.), The Berenstain Bears, Stella and Sam, Ruff-Ruff, Tweet and Dave, Bob the Builder, The Wiggles, Nina’s World, and The Jungle Bunch. When it was Universal Kids: Mighty Mike, Masha and the Bear (even tho they aired that shit WAY too much, it’s still far more enjoyable than Cocomelon imo.), Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, Norman Picklestripes, Where’s Waldo?, Dinotrux, The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Remy & Boo, The Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show, and All Hail King Julien!
Q: How did you feel when they rebranded Sprout to Universal Kids?
A: Kinda disappointed, but i didn’t worry about it too much if they were gonna keep most of Sprout’s content. (And they didn’t in the coming years)
Q: How did you feel when they announced Universal Kids would shut down this year?
A: Not surprised.
Q: If you were to change things with Universal Kids to avoid it from getting shut down, what would you change?
A: I would personally tone it down with the Cocomelon and Masha reruns and remove the former from the channel entirely, actually have original content again, bring back Sprout as a pre-school block on Universal Kids and have it air from 6am to 6pm, air some movies and shows from DreamWorks, and launch an international version of Universal Kids as “Universal Sprout”.
