Madisonville, Louisiana, began as a small late-18th-century settlement known as Coquille or Cokie, inhabited by French and Spanish settlers along with nearby Choctaw communities. Renamed Madisonville in 1811 after President James Madison, the town grew around the Tchefuncte River as an early Gulf Coast hub for shipbuilding and commerce. During the War of 1812, its strategic location led the U.S. Navy to establish a shipyard there, where vessels were constructed and outfitted for the defense of New Orleans, contributing indirectly to American preparations for the Battle of New Orleans.
In the decades that followed, Madisonville prospered as a center for shipbuilding, timber, and brick production, while also attracting New Orleanians who sought the Northshore as a summer retreat. During the Civil War, the town came under Union control relatively early, limiting Confederate activity in the area but causing significant disruption to local trade and shipbuilding. Although Madisonville was spared major destruction, the conflict strained its river-based economy and contributed to a downturn that lingered into the postwar years.
