When encountering a read error, Maxtor drives may add the offending sector to both the pending and reallocated sector counts. This has the rather amusing effect of the reallocated sector count decreasing if a successful write were to be performed on that area. Why this happens, I have absolutely no idea, but I found it really interesting.
The OS used for demonstration is Debian 13.
The drive used for demonstration is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, model 6Y250M0.
