Giyu Tomioka was born into a normal family, but when he was very young, a demon attacked his home and killed his parents. His older sister, Tsutako Tomioka, protected him and sacrificed her own life so he could escape, leaving Giyu carrying deep trauma from an early age. Afterward, he was sent to live with relatives, but feeling like a burden, he ran away and eventually met Urokodaki Sakonji, a former Water Hashira who became his mentor and trainer. During his preparation for the Final Selection exam, Giyu grew close to Sabito and Makomo, but he admired Sabito the most because of his strength, confidence, and kindness. In the Final Selection, Giyu was gravely injured, and Sabito fought and defeated nearly every demon on the mountain to protect others, including Giyu, before being killed by the Hand Demon. Although Giyu survived and passed the exam, he believes he did not truly earn his survival or the title of Hashira, carrying intense survivor’s guilt. Despite his self-doubt, Urokodaki recognized his potential and recommended him for the rank, leading Giyu to become the Water Hashira, inheriting a position he felt Sabito deserved more. Years later, Giyu encountered Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado and, seeing their sibling bond, chose to protect them instead of killing Nezuko, defying the usual code of demon slayers. He sent Tanjiro to Urokodaki for training, unknowingly setting the main story in motion. His past shaped him into a quiet, blunt, and emotionally controlled swordsman who avoids deep relationships for fear of losing people again. Even so, he became one of the most skilled Hashiras and created his own 11th form, Dead Calm (Nagi), a defensive technique that neutralizes incoming attacks. Giyu embodies strength without self-worth and kindness without words, making his silence itself part of his legacy and quiet charm.
