10 minutes of Navajo Song and Dance at The Western Navajo Fair 2024

After the parade, I arrived a bit early for The Western Navajo Fair Pow Wow, so I took the opportunity to explore the fairgrounds. I scoped out the pow wow area to plan the best spots for recording, and as I wandered, I was drawn to the sound of drums coming from another part of the grounds. To my surprise, it was a Navajo Song & Dance! I wasn’t sure if photography or videography was allowed, but after spotting other photographers, I jumped in and captured some amazing shots!
There’s often talk about how pow wows aren’t traditionally Navajo, and that Navajo Song & Dance doesn’t have the same popularity. But for me, pow wows are about connecting with our relatives and sharing in the experience. I only had about 15 minutes to take in this smaller event before heading back to the pow wow for grand entry. Next year, I hope to spend more time at the Navajo Song & Dance!
