Igla-S Deployed: Pakistan on Alert | Defence Dynamics

In a strategic move to bolster its air defence along the western frontier, the Indian Army has inducted fresh batches of the Russian-origin Igla-S Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS). This induction comes amid escalating tensions with Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. The Igla-S systems have been procured under emergency financial powers granted by the central government to address urgent operational requirements. Valued at approximately ₹260 crore, these shoulder-fired missiles have already been delivered and deployed to forward locations.

Designed to counter low-flying threats like drones, helicopters, and fighter jets, the Igla-S offers an upgraded capability over previous variants used since the 1990s. Weighing only 18 kg, it boasts a range of six kilometers and altitude coverage of 3.5 kilometers. It uses heat-seeking infrared technology and can strike targets at speeds exceeding 2,200 kmph, carrying a 1.17-kg warhead with 360-degree targeting.

Older Igla units are being refurbished by Indian firms to extend service life. Additionally, a new tender has been floated for 48 more launchers and 90 missiles. India is also exploring laser-guided VSHORADS for enhanced precision.

Alongside these imports, India is accelerating indigenous defences. The Army has deployed the Mark-1 Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System, which recently neutralised a Pakistani drone in Jammu. It can detect and destroy aerial threats from over 8 km. Meanwhile, DRDO is developing high-powered directed energy weapons to counter advanced threats like cruise missiles.

With this dual strategy of acquiring advanced foreign systems and building domestic capabilities, India’s air defence network is rapidly evolving to neutralise growing aerial threats from hostile neighbours.
